The Without Studio office resides under the historic beams of an apartment within the Foy & Gibson Precinct in Collingwood - an inner-north suburb of Melbourne, Australia. The space, shared with Fred International, utilises some unexpected pairings of colour, texture and scale to marry the the heritage architecture of the building with the furniture and objects that live within it.
Fred International occupied the space for 6 years prior to our coming together. We approached this project like we would any private residential space, by taking the old and re-conceptualising how we all saw it. Working with a large collection of existing pieces we were able to reimagine their purpose through reupholster, finish combinations and placement. We paired these with new pieces and integrated the work of Melbourne-based makers and artisans, layering on the backdrop of the refreshed interior architecture.
The launch of the new space coincided with Melbourne Design Week. We were fortunate for the collective that contributed to the event, including Australia's representatives for Reuber Henning, Halcyon Lake, whose relaunch of the Casablanca Flower Hammock brought another immersive experience to the space.
